NADRA launched a multi-biometric verification system
The telecom industry in Pakistan has introduced a more
efficient method of verifying mobile phone SIMs, whereby more than one
fingerprint will now be fed into the system.
Cellular mobile operators and NADRA signed an agreement
at Pakistan Telecommunication (PTA) headquarters on Friday after which the new
system has been implemented.
According to the statement issued by PTA, after the
introduction of the Multi-Finger Biometric Verification System (MBVS), now
cellular mobile operators will not be able to verify the SIM with the thumb but
with other fingerprints while selling the SIM to any user. It will also have to
be registered on the machine.
According to the PTA, the BVS devices with the companies
have been upgraded, and now thumb and fingerprints can be verified.
The statement said that it will no longer be up to the
representative of the cellular mobile operator to request a thumb or
fingerprint from the customer, but the system will dictate which fingerprints
to register.
The PTA says this will discourage getting SIMs in fake
names while protecting users' data and phone SIM usage.
Chairman Nadra Tariq Malik said that fraud and forgery can be eliminated with fingerprints.
